Architects Sergio Mazza and Giuliana Gramigna open an architectural studio in Milan in 1961. Although they are active in buildings, they are mainly known for their contributions to interior design, both with pieces designed for Arflex, Cinova, Frau, Quattrifolio and Valenti, and their writing on design.

In 1959, Artemide is founded after an encounter with Ernesto Gismondi. Mazza creates several pieces with him, some in molded plastic: the Mida armchair, (1966) the Bacco bar table, (1967), Toga chair (1968), and the Sergesto bookcase (1970).
Sergio Mazza has also directed the magazine Ottagono since it was founded in 1988. This is one of the main media for spreading the approach to contemporary living in Italy.
